February Meeting – Getting Vocal
By Alan J. Lewis – Chapter Sub-Dean
We gather next on Monday, February 27, at Northmont Presbyterian Church, where our host will be Todd Alexander. The menu for the evening, prepared by our beloved Cindy Bowen and her crew, is entitled, “Bring your Valentine to Dinner.” Text Box: February Meeting Menu •	“Heart-beet” Salad, rolls, and butter •	Roasted Sirloin of Beef with mushroom glaze •	Baked seafood casserole •	Baby red potatoes tossed in parsley butter •	Glazed chocolate heart See page 5 for dinner reservations     After a brief business meeting we’ll enjoy a program, entitled "Creation of the Technically and Artistically Advancing Choir:  Basic Musical, Vocal and Repertory Resources to Build the Vocally-skilled and Artistic Choral Singer".  This will be presented jointly by Stephen Schall, music-director at St. Bernard's, Mt. Lebanon, and Douglas Roth, a singer, speech pathologist, and member of the UPMC Voice Center. Their mission? To help us help our choirs to sound better, whatever their size and whatever the music at hand. Musik Innovations will provide a number of choral possibilities for our use, and Stephen and Doug together will make suggestions as to how to get the most out of the music by making incremental vocal improvements in our choirs along the way.

In addition to his long experience in church-music-making, Stephen is an alumnus of Westminster Choir College, where he studied group vocal-techniques with the famous pedagogue, Frauke Haasemann. Douglas has degrees in vocal performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Arizona State University. He also holds a masters degree in speech pathology from Indiana University and is pursuing a PhD at the University of Pittsburgh investigating the cognitive aspects of vocal skill acquisition.   Douglas is also a voice clinician and singing voice specialist at the UPMC Voice Center.  He is active as a performer and voice-teacher in Pittsburgh, in addition to his clinical work. They both have lots to teach us all!
Directions - Northmont Presbyterian Church is at 8169 Perry Highway; from I-279 North, take Exit 5, and make an immediate left onto US 19-N. The church will be on the left, in 4.3 miles (there is a severe jog to the left 1.3 miles into the route on Perry Hwy: don’t be alarmed, just stay on 19-N!)

Moody Men’s Collegiate Choir
Sunday March 11th at 8:30am and 11am services - The Moody Men’s Collegiate Choir from Moody Bible Institute of Chicago will be presenting a concert of sacred music at both morning services at Northmont United Presbyterian Church (8169 Perry Hwy. in the North Hills).
