What Is A Reborn Baby?

                                For those of you who are unfamiliar with what a Reborn Doll is I am writing this to give you

                                an idea. Reborn Dolls also being referred to as 'Fake Babies' is a vinyl baby doll or an

                                unassembled vinyl kit that has been artistically "altered" to look like a real newborn baby.

                                I use a blank slate vinyl kit. No paint or hair just a blank doll head, 2 arms, 2 legs to start with.

                                The vinyl is painted using various techniques to give the appearance of baby skin with

                                effects such as veins, blotching and even milia- milk spots. Hair and eyelashes are added and

                                 eyes, sometimes eyelashes if it is an opened eyed baby. Most people use what is called 'Mohair'.

                                Mohair is taken from an Angora goat and processed to give it a very fine baby like quality.

                                Collectors have varied tastes in what they are looking for in their dolls. Some Reborner (people

                                who create these dolls) make babies with mottled skin, blemishes while others have a totally

                                different skin type on their babies. The same with the hair, some like wispy type hair while

                                others like allot of thicker hair or both. The baby has a body filled with whatever the

                                artist chooses to use, (glass beads, poly fill, plastic pellets) along with the head and limbs to

                                give it a lifelike weight. Usually these babies weight anywhere from 2pounds to 10 pounds

                                depending upon the size and type of baby. These babies actually feel like you are holding a

                                newborn in your arms. Their heads must be supported as they are floppy just like a newborn

                                babies is.

                                Many people who create these dolls have perfected their own techniques. These dolls do

                                take many hours if not weeks to create.
