As Franciscans, we believe peacemaking is integral to gospel living. Peacemaking is not an option; it is a constitutive element of our communal life and our lives as members of the global community. We dedicate our lives to building the kingdom of God by striving actively to be witnesses of the gospel values of peace and justice.
In a violent world where human life and the life of our planet are not respected, our vision of Franciscan peacemaking must be proclaimed boldly and uncompromisingly.
We will strive to: Announce by our lives the gospel value of reconciliation with all people and with the earth. We will reach out to others as reconcilers who promote non-violent ways of conflict resolution and living. Identify with the hungry, homeless and oppressed peoples by our wise use of material possessions and the resources of the earth. We will minister with the poor and marginalized as we work mutually for more equitable access to the earth's resources. Educate ourselves about peace, justice and environmental issues that we may live and minister as people dedicated to overcoming prejudice, discrimination and global destruction. We will pray, research and discern so that we may be effective instruments of peace and of change. Promote the full human development of ourselves and others, realizing the dignity of all people and creation. We will strive consciously to help create a global community where each person and all living things are respected and nurtured. We will evaluate our attitudes, decisions and actions in the light of this Directional Statement. In the spirit of Francis, we seek to be reconcilers of injustice in all forms as we strive compassionately to live in harmony with all of God's creation.
