ORLANDO, FL – FEBRUARY 14, 2002 – Have you ever wanted to see an outfit worn by Janis Joplin or the Dixie Chicks, guitars owned by Robert Cray and Stevie Ray Vaughan or six shooters used by Tex Ritter? Austin fans will see these items and more in the new Hard Rock Cafe Austin located at 222 East 6th Street (on the northwest corner of 6th Street and San Jacinto) in downtown Austin. This week Hard Rock Cafe is installing rare artifacts from these top Austin legends as well as memorabilia from the world’s most important contemporary artists as part of the permanent displays for the new cafe, which is scheduled to open its doors on Wednesday, February 27th. Hard Rock Cafe’s rock memorabilia collection contains 64,000 pieces and is valued at $32 million.
Hard Rock Cafe Austin will feature a two-piece velvet outfit worn by Janis Joplin during her 1969-1970 tour with her Kozmic Blues Band. Fans will also see such rare items as a collection of cowboy boots owned and autographed by Tom Petty, Hank Williams, Jr., Keith Richards and the Oak Ridge Boys. A sombrero worn by Jimi Hendrix on the cover of his 1969 “Smash Hits” album will be displayed, as well as a two-piece toreador suit worn by Elton John during the 1980 “Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player” tour.
