TITLE: Current Trends in Teaching Undergraduate Statistics
ABSTRACT: The past decade has seen the emergence of
a reform movement in
statistics education that has emphasized features
such as active learning,
conceptual understanding, genuine data, use of technology,
collaborative
learning, and communication skills. This talk will
present an overview of
this reform movement, discuss the degree to which
it has been implemented,
and provide advice for instructors who want to learn
more about it. In
keeping with the spirit of active learning, the presentation
will include
sample activities that illustrate these pedagogical
features at both the
algebra-based and post-calculus levels.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Allan Rossman has taught at Dickinson
College since
receiving his Ph.D. in Statistics from Carnegie Mellon
University in 1989.
He is the principal author of Workshop Statistics,
an innovative series
of coursebooks containing activities that lead students
to discover and
explore fundamental ideas of introductory statistics
for themselves. He
directed the MAA's NSF-funded STATS (Statistical Thinking
with Active
Teaching Strategies) project, which conducted a series
of workshops for
mathematicians who teach statistics. Allan Rossman
is currently co-PI on an
NSF grant to develop active learning, data-oriented
curricular materials for
mathematically inclined students. He chairs the ASA/MAA
Joint Committee
on Undergraduate Statistics and is chair-elect of
the Statistical
Education section of the ASA. He serves on the editorial
board of the
Journal of Statistics Education and writes the "Outlier...s"
column of
STATS magazine.
