TIP OF THE MONTH

It is getting to be that time of the year when the winter cold is slipping in and you need to get your dish ready to get through those cold winter nights so you can scan those skys while you snuggle up with the remote, a bowl of popcorn and big screen TV. Your favorite TV show is on FOX and there is butter all over your fingers. You grab for the remote to check out the weather during another one of those milk commercials. When you change the satellite to F3, you get a message either on the screen or the descrambler that says "MOTOR ERROR" or "ACTUATOR ERROR". %*#@#*?!?!?! Not again--the dish has frozen up! Oh well, I guess we watch the same satellite until the morning thaw.

Has ever happened to you before, if it has, I have an inexpensive cure for you. On most satellite systems you will find a part called a linniar actuator. Also some times refered to as a drive arm. Else you may have a horizon to horizon mount/actuator which this cure would not pertain to. If you have one of these, it is a well worth it to get an accordian boot to put on the shaft. I have found from my experience in servicing satellite systems that freezing up of the drive is a common occurence with alot systems. Most people consider the dish freezing up is somthing that normally will happen durring the cold weather. The reason that this problem occours is that the seal around the end of the outer shaft that is used to keep the water from getting in between the outer tube and inner shaft does not always do its job. The best solution for this problem, I have found, is an accordian boot. If you do not use one of these to protect your drive arm from the harsh winter weather, the internal worm gear can corrode with rust and destroy your drive from the inside out.

Dish Doctor's Home Electronics has put out a special price on boots untill December 10th. Small boots fit 1.2" shafts and are on sale at $13.00 each. Large boots fit 2" shafts and are on sale at $14.00 each.
